Parents with additional needs project

Over the past year our Information, Advice & Advocacy Service have been working with parents who have learning disabilities on an exciting new project.

They wanted to find out what support parents needed to help them to be good parents, and to decide how to create this support.

In March, Tina, Leanne and 3 parents with experience shared what they found out from all the parents they spoke to, at an event for parents and professionals.

We told them parents wanted support from other parents like themselves, and from advocates. We told them parents wanted practical help in ways that were easy to understand. We told them parents wanted professionals to be trained in understanding peoples’ needs, how to talk so parents understand, and how to treat parents as equal partners when working with them.

We shared exciting news about some training we are going to make and deliver for professionals working in the Family Hubs. This will teach them how to work with parents with learning disabilities and needs better. This is what parents said they needed.

We will be employing parents with learning disabilities and needs to coproduce this training and to deliver it to Family Hub workers in October and November this year.

At the end of the event, we formed a new steering group of parents and professionals who will work together to make sure all the other things parents need to help them happen.

Lots of people have signed up to be trainers and join the steering group! If you are a parent or professional interested in joining us, contact Tina in the Wirral Mencap office.
